Ranking of the BL Series for 2022 (Top 10 BL Series 2022 MidYear)
Ranking of the BL Series for 2022 (Top 10 BL Series 2022 MidYear)
Many BL series were released within the last six months of 2022, and watching their stories offered us the finest moments. I'll be ranking the BL series I've enjoyed over the last six months and explaining why on my blog. Be aware that only shows I have finished watching will be taken into account for this ranking; current BLs are not. Please feel free to share your own ranking for the first half of 2022 in the comment box below if you have one. Let's start the blog straight now without further ado.
#10. Cherry Blossoms After Winter
Although I have seen the entire series in a while, anytime I see stuff about it, I still giggle as hard as I did the first time I saw it. Cherry Blossoms After Winter had a simple yet engaging plot, but it lacked a thrilling ending that would have kept me turning pages. The first half of the show had me more excited, but as the middle and end arrived, it merely maintained the narrative flow and did not reach a high. The main characters' chemistry was excellent, and the contrast they created at some points worked well to balance this series. Cherry Blossoms After Winter is not an exception to the problem that Korean BLs still have with having just 8 episodes and a short runtime. This BL would have been at its best if the narrative had developed a little farther.
#9. Dear Doctor
One of the things I had always anticipated in a BL drama was the connection of the supernatural and medical, and luckily, it happened. To be completely honest, this series' narrative and premise were truly its strongest features, giving it the upper hand over the other shows on our list. My only issue was with the plot's general direction. Even though I found one of the main characters' anger and hot-headedness to be a little irritating, I understood that it was an integral component of both the character and the storyline. But after watching the entire series, there was a point where I thought the storyline was simply jumping about. Fortunately, the latter part was able to hold my attention and pique my curiosity about how the romance between a doctor and a soul reaper would end. The emotional involvement I felt for each character made this series the greatest for me. The characters have a lot of development, which is one aspect of the show that I will miss. Furthermore, I became even more attracted to this series as a result of the sad and terrible episodes of Dear Doctor.
#8. Mr. Unlucky Has No Choice But To Kiss
Japanese BL series are excellent, and Mr. Unlucky Has No Choice is one of my go-to picks anytime I want to see something uplifting. This series got off to a fantastic start, and it caught my attention right away. The main characters' good and bad fortune was a very compelling storyline that kept the narrative moving forward. Although it was one of its strengths, because it did not peak as much towards the end, it also turned into one of its weaknesses. The development of their love story wasn't the best aspect of this series, much like Cherry Blossoms After Winter's final episodes didn't add anything new. Aside from that, their chemistry is perhaps my favorite aspect of the show, and it definitely contributed to how much I loved this BL.
#7. Blueming
The fact that it has been so long since I finished watching this Korean BL really works against it. However, its story remains one of the greatest Korean BLs I have ever seen, and it is undoubtedly one of the cleanest. Even though Blueming merely has a straightforward narrative and does not provide a complex one, its clarity helped it stand out. By utilizing some of the techniques they've showed us in some of the episodes, the cinematography is likewise of the finest quality. The two actors did a fantastic job of capturing the awkwardness between the two characters as they gradually warmed up to one another. The final few episodes of this series may have given us a glimpse of some angst, but ultimately the main characters were able to mend their relationship.
#6. To My Star: Our Untold Stories
To My Star Season 2 managed to give a stronger and significantly more complicated plot despite the fact that it is now in season 2. In terms of acting, season 2 is miles ahead of season 1, and that is evident in the first few minutes of the season. The one aspect of season 2 that I did not enjoy was the storyline and plot, despite the fact that the production overall improved and is now among the finest for a Korean BL. The sudden disappearance of Han Ji Woo and Seo Joon's breakup were the two events that caused me the most confusion while connecting the first and second seasons together. Han Ji Woo's reasons were revealed in the series, but I thought Seo Joon's unexpected leaving without a proper explanation—especially in light of the fact that his parents had abandoned him because he was an actor—was really upsetting.
#5. Semantic Error
Semantic Error is now my favorite Korean BL of this year, and its straightforward yet lovely plot gave it the upper hand over the other titles on my list. The majority of the series features the enemies to lovers theme, which is why it quickly won my heart. One of the show's strengths was the attitude contrast between the two main characters, and that plotline improved the chemistry between the two stars. My main issue with this series was how brief it was, but given that the manhwa isn't yet complete, I'm glad that it concluded on a happy note.
#4. The Miracle Of Teddy Bear
You might be wondering why, despite the fact that the finale episode of this series received mixed reviews, it was ranked higher than other shows on our list. The series conclusion, however, does not accurately represent the entire run, and in my opinion, the finale was the most sensible way to wrap up this sort of show. The Miracle Of Teddy Bear was full of symbolism and timely themes that were woven into an intriguing mystery storyline. The first few episodes could be difficult to watch, not because they were bad but rather because of Nut's rude personality; as the series progressed, the series gave a full explanation of how he got to have that attitude. One of this series' biggest achievements, in my opinion, is how beautifully each and every character was tied to everything. I could watch the chemistry between the two main characters over and over again and never grow tired of it. Even though the show's ending is controversial, I believe it was the ideal way to wrap things off. Nut will always appreciate the way that Tofu's character saved his life.
#3. Cupid's Last Wish
I had no idea a body swap plot could be executed so well and rank in my top three for the first half of 2022. One of the finest series I've ever watched this year was EarthMix, and it was consistently good. I believe Cupid's Last Wish is an underestimated BL in part because to the idea behind its storyline. This show's ability to provide this sort of narrative was made possible by the way the Win character was handled. Even though Win's character was trapped in Lin's body, most of the time we see him in Korn's perspective. At first, this might seem confusing, but the finest part of it was undoubtedly the intermittent switching of characters. The series gained another layer of plot when Cupid's Last Wish actually seemed like a journey.
#2. Not Me
I always think that this is a masterpiece and by far the greatest BL series that GMMTV has ever created. Not Me made a lot of contributions to the topic when it initially aired since the premise is very different from the typical plots that GMMTV had provided us for the previous couple of years. I kind of agree with some who say that the series finale wasn't the best, and I thought it might have been better even though I couldn't come up with a better way to wrap up the plot. Another thing is that OffGun had always been one of my favorite on-screen BL couples, so I was happy to see that they had much improved since I first saw them. In addition, DanYok had the potential to shine stronger on this show but the narrative prevented it. Overall, Not Me got the year off to a great start and quickly became the standard.
#1. Triage The Series
I never would have imagined that this genre would top my list for the first half of 2022, but I have never regretted taking the time to watch the full series. It had one of the greatest plots of the bunch, and the characters' level of mystery was incredible. The series' final loop may have fallen short behind its others, but it nevertheless provided us with a satisfying conclusin to Tin and Tol's tale. One of Triage's strongest features is the connection between Tin and Tol, and although though the narrative was more concerned with saving Tol's life, it still managed to include their romance. Triage is undoubtedly a step above the others.
#1. KinnPorsche The Series
Triage and KinnPorsche tied for first place in my list, therefore I decided to give them both equal consideration. It will be challenging to follow this sort of series because KinnPorsche has altered the way we perceive BL series in terms of their production quality. Despite the fact that I don't like some of the scenes, they were able to tone them down a bit from the novel and make them far more tolerable for everyone. The three couples obviously did their best to maintain the relationship, and their acting was quite convincing. This series had several action scenes, particularly in the finale, and they exceeded expectations. I'm hoping that if there is a season 2, they would go into greater depth with their personalities and show how they would take down Korn as the main antagonist.
Even though the year is just halfway through, we all want the BL quality to continue to rise. Please feel free to comment below if you have a different ranking. I appreciate you reading. I'll see you on the next one, then.
