Unpopular BL Perspectives
Unpopular BL Perspectives
Since the day we started becoming BL fans, we have been sharing the BL series that we enjoy for quite some time. However, despite the fact that we have similar lists of BL series that we enjoy, our thoughts on some of the topics that these BLs try to use or explore with their audiences disagree. We'll talk about some of the unpopular perspectives that you've expressed in comments on my blogs in this blog. Just a friendly reminder to continue honest discussions with everyone, regardless of differences in perspective. Let's start the blog straight now without further ado.
The topic of BLs outside of the real world is our first unpopular opinion. The number of BL fans expanded dramatically during the epidemic, and the production of BLs also grew significantly. We watched a variety of BLs and were exposed to various levels of fiction because we were under lockdown. Today, having learned that the shows we have been watching for the last two years are quite different from the real world. To be fair, this applies to both BL and non-BL shows. However, the final say in these matters should always rest with the story's and the script's writer. There are series that go beyond our imagination but are well welcomed by many fans, as well as ones that depict the realities of our society but may be perceived as uninteresting and without effect by other audiences. Others don't care if this series still makes sense to them as long as they are entertained, and other individuals would like the shows that might provide them a mirror of real life.
Our second unpopular perspective is that not every on-screen BL pair could win over everyone, and that's normal. I enjoy OhmFluke as a screen couple and really enjoy the dynamics they convey in their shows. It's also true that most of their shows have a rather melancholy vibe, but it might be because Fluke was already well-known for his dramatic scenes before Until We Meet Again. Just so we can show their other sides as actors, I hope we can see Ohm and Fluke in a series that isn't just focused on drama. Because most second seasons of BLs couldn't keep up the anticipation of the first season and the plot flow wasn't as strong as it was in the first, I'm likewise not a big fan of them. SOTUS S and Still 2gether, even though it's not really a second season, were the only exceptions I could think of. The audience demand and the excitement that was created around the series are likely to blame for the failure of the second season. The length of time required for both scriptwriting and production might be another factor. The second season should come out soon after the first to benefit on the excitement that the first season has created.
We have the subject of feminization and infantilization for the third unpopular opinion. Stereotyping is one of the reasons I stopped using the terms top and bottom in my posts. We also believe that the weaker half of the couple should always be at the bottom, but as people, we are more than this. I occasionally observe the infantilization of characters as well, but I believe this is how the writers intended for them to be in order to steer the story in the direction they desired. Although it occasionally succeeds in grabbing the audience's attention, most of the time it annoys certain individuals.
The subject of BL quality is what we have for the fourth unpopular viewpoint. I kind of agree that the quality of BLs we now have isn't comparable to that of non-BLs, but I also believe that the quality gap is beginning to shrink. BLs weren't of the highest quality five to six years ago, but those shows laid the path for what we have now. Because of ongoing constructive feedback, we gradually increase the quality of the BL shows in terms of production quality, acting performances, script quality, narrative, and our perception of the LGBTQ+ community as a single community. We have a lot of strong BLs for this year that are much better than the prior two years, which is a positive sign that we are continuously developing. Even though it could take a few more years to catch up to non-BL shows, we are making progress as long as BLs get better every year.
We have fewer University BLs for the sixth valid comment. Although I've always been outspoken about my opinions on these kind of BLs, having more options is actually a good thing. There are other BLs with a university theme that I typically don't want to spend my time on, but a lot of people do, and that's what counts. Another factor is that school-based BLs are what first make BL popular. This was the case with Lovesick, SOTUS, and 2gether The Series from 2014 to 2016, as well as from 2020. As a result, school-based BLs will continue to be well-liked in 2022 and in the years to come.
I Told Sunset About You is the subject of the sixth unpopular viewpoint, which is that it is uninteresting. The majority of the time, we are afraid of being attacked online by strangers if we have a different view about those well-known BL shows. However, it's acceptable if we don't like something as long as we still show respect to those who do. I Told Sunset About You had good actors in it, however based on the comment, one BL fan didn't appreciate it. The story's premise, the characters' ongoing conflict, or other elements that we may or may not find interesting might all be contributing factors in addition to the actors. I really like I Told Sunset About You because it was a well-written narrative, but this opinion is only mine, and other people may feel otherwise. At the end of the day, we select what we like and fully enjoy in it.
The subject of consent in BLs and non-BLs is the subject of the sixth unpopular viewpoint. If you were to ask me, I would no longer classify this subject as unpopular due to the fact that many fans are now better informed about consent, especially in BL shows. Additionally, because it's crucial that they avoid romanticizing non-consensual acts, the majority of BL series are now more cautious when creating such scenes. The BL shows are improving in this topic at least to the extent that these kinds of problems have already diminished. I also sort of agree that when it comes to BL and non-BL shows, consent should be made clearer from the start.
These are your unpopular BL perspectives. Please leave your additional unpopular opinions in the comment section below if you have any. Do you agree or disagree with the subjects we covered earlier? I appreciate you reading. I'll see you on the next one, then.
