19 Must-Watch BL Series in December 2023!

 19 Must-Watch BL Series in December 2023!

There are multiple continuing BL dramas in December, therefore it's time for me to provide my honest opinion on some of the shows on my watch list. In this blog, we will include all of the BL series that are presently showing this month as well as others that will air in late December. You can also contribute your own BL Series watchlist and recommendations in the comments section below. Just a heads up: this blog contains spoilers. Let's go straight into the blog, shall we?

#1. The Sign

This came as a surprise. I never anticipated this series to be on the level that it did, yet here I am promoting it to others who haven't watched it yet. To give you a quick rundown of why I'm enjoying this series so far: first, it has a unique and well-detailed story; second, the production quality is excellent. It's clear from the outset that it has a large budget overall, which elevates it above the competition; third, the cast is ideal for their roles. There were instances when we believed a specific actor was miscast for various reasons, but this one felt so much more natural when it came to their acting talents; finally, the couple's chemistry is merely chef's kiss. I've always been skeptical of first-time on-screen couples, but Billy and Babe have blown me away since their first scene in this series. They are talented actors. It's not awful for action scenes, but there were times when I felt it might have been better, especially in terms of choreography, to make it even smoother and more natural. The inclusion of the supernatural genre increases the viewer's interest in the main characters and gives a bit more depth to their background. For the time being, it's doing a good job at enticing viewers to stay watching, and I'm hopeful that it will continue until the end. Every Saturday, The Sign may be viewed on YouTube.

#2. Cherry Magic

Just to be clear, TayNew's Cherry Magic is not a replica of the Japanese original, which aired in 2020. It is, in fact, an adaptation of the Japanese manga on which both versions are based. I felt nostalgic seeing TayNew after so many years the instant I lay eyes on this series. Both have become significantly more proficient actors while also playing charismatic characters on-screen, making them even more endearing. I'm not a big fan of Thai comedies in general, but this one had me laugh so hard during the comic parts involving the main characters that I felt cringey at times. Every Saturday, you may watch Cherry Magic on YouTube.

#3. Cooking Crush

OffGun has appeared in heavy drama series Theory of Love in 2019, dark thriller and action series Not Me in 2021, and even a Rom-Com as a side couple in 2016's Puppy Honey. It's the first time the on-screen couple has been in a full-fledged comedy, so this is something fresh for them as actors. Despite the complaints leveled at this BL, I find myself embracing and appreciating it. I didn't grimace when watching the funny parts because they weren't very long. Off and Gun's personality are so similar to their personas that they act naturally without even trying. I'd also want to mention how good Off is in this series. Off is already extremely attractive, but his manner in this BL is merely a chef's kiss. The side characters were also appealing, to the point that I'm interested in their own storylines. Even with a change in cast in one of the characters, the dynamics of Fire and Dynamite are extremely surprising. The series' rating and amount of views may be suffering as a result of having an uncut version on a separate platform. This is a unique approach for a GMMTV series, so I hope fans would check into it as well. Every Sunday, Cooking Crush may be seen on YouTube and for uncut version on WeTV.

#4. Last Twilight

This is fantastic. Because of how well written this is, it certainly ranks in my Top 3 of all the BLs I've seen this year. Some questioned Jimmy and Sea's ability to pull this off, but I have always believed that they could do it due of their connection. A fantastic story combined with terrific actors and a great director equals a masterpiece. Romance might be considered monotonous at times owing to its plain narrative, yet Last Twilight can also surprise us with its plot twist. Spoiler alert: the extra tension between Day and August was unexpected in the plot. I expected August to harbor a grudge against Day, but not to have them in a love situation. Anyway, Day's birthday celebration was undoubtedly distressing for him after what August had done, but I also feel that August was only trying to help his friend, without considering the ramifications of his actions. Now that we've seen the arcs of his friends and his former partner in court, it's probably time to find out what's really behind Day's resentment against his brother. Because everything about this BL is enjoyable, I forget about the technicalities. Every Friday, Last Twilight may be viewed on YouTube.

#5. Night Dream

It's the most recent addition to my current BL watchlist, and after watching the first episode, I'm rather pleased. Unlike some of the other dramas on our list, it lacks a complex narrative twist, yet it succeeds in its mission: to portray a love story. Don't have high hopes for this one because it's not the typical series that starts with love moments; instead, it tries to connect the characters from their history to the present. I enjoy the main couple, therefore I'm curious how they'll perform in major drama sequences until we reach the finale. If there's one thing I'd add to this series in the next part, it would be another character who has a love interest with Dream, just to liven up the storyline a little bit, however clichédly. I'm hoping this turns into a fantastic romance drama series. Every Saturday, Night Dream may be viewed on YouTube and YOUKU.

#6. Sahara Sensei & Toki-kun

I truly miss it when our watchlist is full of Japanese BLs since they usually have some of the most creative narratives in the industry. Watching Sahara Sensei & Toki-kun reminds me of when I first saw Cherry Magic and My Love Mix-up, when Japanese BLs were still new to me. Toki is a rough guy who enjoys brawling, but he also has a comedic side that I find endearing to see. I'm not a big fan of teacher-student relationships, so I'd have to think about something romantic between Ichiro and Toki for a bit. Anyway, this series is pretty nice for me, thus it is highly recommended. Every Friday, Sahara Sensei and Toki-kun may be seen on GaGaOOLala and iQiYi for select locations.

#7. Colorful Melody

The teaser made me believe that this BL would have excellent cinematography, and it did not disappoint. It's a mini-series with four episodes that last approximately 25 minutes each, making it ideal for binge-watching. But, before you watch it, keep in mind that the finale is bittersweet, which may not be to everyone's taste. Throughout the series, the general vibe is sorrowful, yet it fits the storyline perfectly. Like I stated, the cinematography was excellent, the atmosphere was soothing, and the music was soothing to my ears, however the main actors' performance was missing throughout the entire show. I anticipated them to pull off deeper heavier drama acting at times, but it remained flat throughout the entire show. Anyway, it was a wonderful story to tell, and I enjoyed it even if I wasn't very engaged in the characters. WeTV Thailand releases Colorful Melody.
